Cap Sante Boat Haven | Anacortes, Washington

Located to the east of downtown Anacortes, the Cap Sante Boat Haven redevelopment and public access improvements occurred as part of a cooperative effort between the Department of Ecology, the State Recreation and Conservation Office, and the Port of Anacortes, to provide a multi-phased soil clean up of this formerly industrial waterfront property. HBB and the Port held a series of workshops to identify public access opportunities, user requirements, program constraints, and maintenance requirements for the Boat Haven. The first design phase involved a new central pier with sheltered kiosks and a granite compass rose set into the paving of the pier. The pedestrian light fixtures along the pier support banners and are integrated into a custom-designed cable guardrail.

The second phase provided a textured concrete, block seawall and low plantings that separate the seawall from the new esplanade. Other improvements include contemporary site furnishings, moveable outdoor tables and chairs, a viewpoint and several interpretive signs. HBB also facilitated the integration of a public art sculpture into the gateway plaza. Along the esplanade, a separate outdoor plaza is surrounded by custom concrete benches with recessed lighting and ceramic tiles colored by children at the local waterfront festival. The plaza surface is paved with exposed, recycled blue glass aggregate separated by curved stainless steel screeds in a pattern that references the adjacent waterfront context and differentiates this gathering area from the esplanade.
